"I have finally sequenced the blood sample in question, and I have some
exciting news: It is almost certainly a P. (t.) nitidus! The genbank sequence for nitidus was produced by    Helbig  et al. (1995),  which should certainly be reliable. The sample that I was given definitely
contained DNA that matches the Helbig's nitidus sequence and is quite  different from all known viridanus sequences. Contamination is not a  possibility because I have not yet worked with nitidus samples in my new
lab. In Genbank there are nitidus and viridanus cytochrome b sequences that  have 701 base-pairs (bp) of overlap. I sequenced those 701 bp from sample  B135, both forward and backward. The sequences were very clean. Out of  those 701 bp, there is only one mismatch (a base that is different, due to  a point mutation) between B135 and the Genbank nitidus. In contrast, there  are 25 mismatches between B135 and the Genbank viridanus. This translates  into the following percent divergences (raw DNA divergences):

 B135 to nitidus: 0.14%
 B135 to viridanus: 3.57%
 nitidus to viridanus: 3.42%

Anyway, if the above was hard to follow, here is the take-home message: I  believe the results of this being a mistake are far below 1%, probably  more like 1/1000 or less. So go ahead and let people know."

 Best wishes, Darren Irwin
